# Completing Study Tasks

Once you're enrolled in a project, everything the research team needs from you appears as an **action item** under **In Progress**, grouped by project. Open an action item to complete it. This page explains what each type of task involves.

{% hint style="info" %}
On projects with **face verification** enabled, you may be asked to re-verify your face with each submission — a quick camera scan confirming it's still you. See [About face verification](/finding-and-joining-projects.md#about-face-verification).
{% endhint %}

## Surveys

Surveys are questionnaires you complete at your own pace. They can include multiple-choice questions, ratings, rankings, free-text answers, and file uploads, and may show or hide questions based on your earlier answers.

* **Required questions** must be answered before you can continue.
* Multi-page surveys show your progress as you go.
* When you finish, your response is submitted to the research team for review.

### Response review and revisions

After you submit, the research team reviews your response. Most of the time it's approved and you're done. Occasionally a team may send a response back with a **revision request** — we will notify you automatically and ask you to resubmit. Open the action item again, update your answers, and resubmit.

## Evaluations

Evaluations are recorded, self-guided tasks: you work through a set of activities on your own time while the app records what you do and say. A research team member isn't present — the recording *is* the session.

### What gets recorded

Depending on the study's setup, an evaluation records:

* **Your screen** — what you do as you complete each task
* **Your camera** — your face and reactions
* **Your microphone** — always required. If your microphone isn't enabled, you won't be able to submit.

The project card and evaluation instructions tell you which device to use (desktop, mobile, or your choice) and the estimated session duration.

### How an evaluation works

1. Open the evaluation from your action items.
2. Grant screen, camera, and microphone permissions when prompted.
3. Work through the tasks **in order**. Each task describes a goal — do it the way you naturally would, and **think aloud** as you go. Your commentary often provides the most value in the recording.
4. Some tasks are followed by short **follow-up questions**; instruction pop-ups may appear between tasks — read and close them to continue.
5. Submit when you've completed all tasks. Plan to finish an evaluation in a single sitting.

### Post-study surveys

Some evaluations include a **post-study survey** — a short questionnaire linked to the session or to specific tasks, where you reflect on the experience after recording. If your evaluation has one, it appears as part of the same flow or as a follow-up action item; complete it so your session counts as finished.

### If the recording won't start

If the session won't begin or the start button doesn't respond, check your **browser permissions** first:

1. Check that your browser has permission to use your **camera, microphone, and screen recording**. In Chrome, select the icon to the left of the address bar to review site permissions.
2. On a Mac, also confirm that you have granted **Screen Recording** permission to the browser in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
3. After changing a permission, **reload the page** (or restart the browser) and try again.
4. Still stuck? Contact support — see [Support](/messages-and-support.md).

### Revision requests

If something went wrong with a recording — you muted the mic, or you skipped a task — the research team can request a revision for a specific task rather than rejecting your submission. We will notify you with the reason and you can re-record just that task.

## Interviews

Some projects include live interview sessions — scheduled video calls with the research team.

* You'll receive a **unique joining link** for your session, along with instructions and any preparation materials.
* Join a few minutes early to test your camera and microphone.
* When you join, you may briefly wait "backstage" until the researcher brings you into the session.
* Sessions are recorded — we will clearly notify you when recording begins.

## Signing documents

Some projects require signed documents — consent forms, NDAs, or participation agreements. These appear as action items; review and sign them digitally through the integrated e-signature system. Signed documents show as completed tasks on your dashboard.

## Confidentiality

Studies often show you unreleased products, prototypes, or research questions that aren't public. Everything you see and do inside a study is **confidential** — don't share study content, screenshots, or details outside the platform. This is part of the Terms and Conditions and panel agreement you accepted when you joined, and some projects add their own NDA as a signed document.

## Deadlines — and what happens if you miss one

Studies run on schedules, and research teams need submissions in by the deadline to include them in their analysis.

* **If you know you'll miss a deadline, contact support as early as possible** at **<support@pulselabs.ai>**. Include the project name and deadline so the team can determine whether they can grant an extension.
* **A missed deadline can cost you the payment.** On some projects, if you submit work after the deadline, we can't include it in the study, which means we may not compensate you.

## Frequently asked questions

<details>

<summary>Why won't my evaluation start or submit?</summary>

Check that your browser can access your camera, microphone, and screen recording, and reload the page after changing permissions. Evaluations require audio, so the system may block a submission if you disable the microphone. See [If the recording won't start](#if-the-recording-wont-start).

<details>

<summary>What should I do if I may miss a deadline?</summary>

Email **<support@pulselabs.ai>** as early as possible and include the project name and deadline. If you submit late work, the team may not include it in the study and we may not compensate it.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I share what I saw in a study?</summary>

No. Study content, screenshots, recordings, prototypes, and other details are confidential and stay inside the platform. Confidentiality is part of the Terms and Conditions and panel agreement, and some projects also require a separate NDA.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What happens if my submission needs fixing?</summary>

The research team can send a **revision request** for a specific survey response or evaluation task instead of rejecting your submission. We notify you with the reason; open the action item again, update or re-record just that part, and resubmit.

## Tips for quality submissions

* **Check permissions before you start** — camera, microphone, and screen sharing. A muted mic triggers a revision request most frequently.
* **Think aloud during evaluations.** Say what you're looking for, what confuses you, what you expected. There are no wrong answers.
* **Do tasks in a quiet space** so your audio is clear.
* **Complete action items promptly.** Studies have deadlines and response limits.
